Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We'll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material -- e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film -- but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1831, John Pemberton was born. The Georgia pharmacist invented Coca-Cola, which in its earliest versions, was sold as a patent medicine which Pemberton claimed would cure everything from headaches to morphine addiction. By the time of its 50th anniversary, Coke was available throughout the United States, and despite an occasional misstep -- the 1980s "New Coke" fiasco, for instance -- it has become a global product, available for sale in every country except Cuba and North Korea. Mark Pendergrast's For God, Country & Coca-Cola is a thorough history of Pemberton, Coca-Cola, and the company; it's available as an Axis360 e-book and in print. |

On this day in 1914, Billy Eckstine was born. He led the Billy Eckstine Orchestra in the 1940s, a band that served as a training ground for a generation of jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, and Charlie Parker. By the 1950s, he had left the band behind and turned to a career as a solo singer. His resonant baritone was well suited to romantic love songs, and his image of sophisticated cool made him popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s. His 1950 album Songs by Billy Eckstine is available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1951, Angelica Huston was born. She was part of a legendary Hollywood family -- actor Walter Huston was her grandfather, and director John Huston was her father -- who began her career with small roles in her father's movies. She began to study acting in the early 1980s, and has made an average of one or two movies every year since then. She stars as Calamity Jane in the 1995 adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Buffalo Girls; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |
