In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

20th Century Classics: Leos Janacek On this day in 1854, Leos Janácek was born. Janácek's music was strongly influenced by the folksongs of Moravia (a region of what is now the Czech Republic). He was a prolific composer for almost sixty years, but most of what are now considered his major works were written in the last decade of his life. Some of those works, including the Sinfonietta and the Glagolitic Mass, are collected in the 20th-Century Classics volume devoted to Janácek; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Mississippi John Hurt: Satisfied On this day in 1893, Mississippi John Hurt was born. Hurt was a blues singer whose recordings in the late 1920s were not commercially successful, and who spent most of his life as a farmer. In 1963, a fan of old blues records tracked him down and convinced him to make new records, which sparked a revived interest in his generation of blues musicians. His revived career was brief, as Hurt died in 1966. Several of Hurt's recordings, from both the 1920s and the 1960s, are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
M. F. K. Fisher: Provence And on this day in 1908, M. F. K. Fisher was born. Over a fifty-year period, Fisher wrote dozens of books, most of which combined food writing, travelogue, and memoir. She spent most of her adult life moving back and forth between California and Europe -- she spent time in France, Holland, and Switzerland -- and wrote about the food and culture of all of those places. M. F. K. Fisher's Provence collects writings from throughout her life about the years she spent in Provence; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive.
