Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. WE'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

The Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins On this day in 1844, Gerard Manley Hopkins was born. He was a poet and a Jesuit priest. He published only a few of his poems during his lifetime, feeling that publication would be a violation of the humility required by his religious calling. His poetry is noted for its striking imagery, and his attention to the sounds of language make his poetry particularly well-suited to reading aloud. The Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins is available in print.
The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter On this day in 1866, Beatrix Potter was born. Potter had a lifelong interest in nature. As a child, she and her brother raised a variety of small pets -- rabbits, mice, a hedgehog -- and as a young woman, she made serious scientific study of mushrooms and other fungi. Many of her drawings are still used by specialist to identify species of fungi. The children's books for which she is remembered today began with a letter to the ill son of a friend, in which she told him the story that would become The Tale of Peter Rabbit. More than 20 other tales would follow; The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter is available as an e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
John Feinstein: The Punch And on this day in 1956, John Feinstein was born. He writes about sports, often going behind the scenes to focus on parts of the story that the fan rarely gets to see -- the preparation for a major golf tournament in Open, or a year in the life of two rival college college programs in A Civil War: Army vs. Navy. In The Punch, he tells the story of a 1977 basketball game and its aftermath. During the game, a fight broke out and Kermit Washington threw a ferocious punch that nearly killed Rudy Tomjanovich; both men and the NBA were altered by the incident. The Punch is available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
