Stern recorded dozens of violin concertos and a large amount of chamber music; several of his recordings are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

Starr was a pop singer who had great success in the 1940s and 1950s with such songs as "Wheel of Fortune," "The Rock and Roll Waltz," and the Christmas song "The Man With the Bag." And on this day in 1955, Bela Tarr was born. The Hungarian director has been praised for his distinctive style; he prefers very long takes and minimal editing, and frequently casts non-professional actors. His movies tend to somewhat bleak, pessimistic, philosophical views of the human condition. Tarr's 2011 film, The Turin Horse, is inspired by an anecdote about the mental breakdown of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |
