On this day in 1899, Ernest Hemingway was born. His novels and short stories are marked by terse, blunt prose and simple, straightforward sentences; Hemingway argued for what he called the "iceberg theory" of writing, the idea that which is omitted and unseen can have just as much power as that which is presented directly to the reader. Many of Hemingway's books are available as e-books from OverDrive. |

On this day in 1926, Norman Jewison was born. He began his career as an in-house director for Canada's CBC Television before moving to New York and beginning to make movies. His films often dealt with complex social and political issues -- gambling, the Cold War, racism, religious visions, corporate control of entertainment, the challenges faced by Vietnam veterans -- but avoided preaching to the audience. His 1967 classic In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, is available for streaming at Hoopla, or on DVD. |

And on this day in 1930, Helen Merrill was born. She began singing in jazz clubs at the age of 14, and quickly drew the attention of more established musicians; her first two albums were produced by Quincy Jones and Gil Evans. She has devoted most of her career to the Great American Songbook, but has occasionally ventured into other areas, recording albums of bossa nova and Italian and Croatian songs. Her 1956 album Dream of You is available for streaming and download at Freegal. |
