On this day in 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg led a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The German Resistance was not entirely opposed to Hitler's goals, but believed that his military strategy would (at best) lead to a prolonged war; they felt that they could win the war quickly. After the failed attempt, more than 7,000 were arrested and nearly 5,000 executed, as Hitler used the plot as an excuse to settle scores with many who had no connection to the plot, but whose loyalties he doubted. The documentary Operation Valkyrie tells the story of the plot; it's available for streaming at Hoopla, or on DVD. |

On this day in 1947, Carlos Santana was born. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, his band Santana combined rock music with Latin American rhythms and percussion. As Santana moved the band away from rock towards jazz, they became less commercially successful, though the critics continued to praise their music. Santana returned to commercial rock at the beginning of the 2000s with a string of hits pairing him with younger artists. The band's earliest hits are collected on Santana's Greatest Hits, which is available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1969, the Apollo 11 mission landed the first humans on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin each spent a bit more than 2 hours on the lunar surface. In six further Apollo missions over the next three years, ten more men would set foot on the moon. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton tell the story of the Apollo program in Moon Shot; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |
