On this day in 1868, Florence Foster Jenkins was born. Jenkins was a socialite who had always dreamed of being a singer. When she inherited enough money to support a singing career, she began performing, mostly in private clubs where critics were not allowed. Jenkins was a famously incompetent singer, and the entertainment of her recitals came from the unintended comedy. At the age of 76, Jenkins performed at Carnegie Hall, where she could not keep the critics away, and was reportedly devastated by the vicious reviews. In the 1940s, Jenkins made a few recordings, most of which are collected on The Glory (????) of the Human Voice, which is available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1960, Atom Egoyan was born. Egoyan is considered one of Canada's finest directors. His plots are often non-linear, with events told out of sequence, and his characters are frequently struggling to make genuine connections, despite the powerful forces that separate them. Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon star in Egoyan's 2013 film Devil's Knot, his telling of the true story of the West Memphis Three, three teenagers who were convicted in the early 1990s of killing three young boys. Devil's Knot is available for streaming at Hoopla. |
