Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We'll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorties, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material -- e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamble music and film -- but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1943, LaVyrle Spencer was born. She is the author of more than 20 romance novels, which often focus on the broader family and community rather than just the central romantic couple. Her heroes and heroines are more likely to be relatively ordinary "boy/girl next door" types than glamorous adventurers, which led to resistance from publishers early in her career. Spencer announced her retirement from writing in 1997. Many of her novels are available as e-books and e-audios from OverDrive. |

On this day in 1950, Phoebe Snow was born. Her first album, in 1974, was a huge critical and commercial success; she receved great praise for her stylistic range and extraordinary voice. She made relatively few albums, due to the demands of caring for an chronically ill daughter whom Snow did not wish to see institutionalized. The Very Best of Phoebe Snow is available for streaming and download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1958, Wong Kar-Wai was born. The Hong Kong screenwriter and director is noted for a somewhat cryptic storytelling style featuring lush visuals and music; his characters are often melancholy outsiders. The 1990 film Days of Being Wild was not a huge success when it was released, but now it routinely appears near the top of critics' lists of the great Hong Kong films. It's available for streaming at Hoopla and on DVD. |
