In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Dorothy Fields On this day in 1905, Dorothy Fields was born. Fields was one of the few successful female songwriters during the age of the Great American Songbook. In a career of nearly fifty years, she wrote lyrics for more than 400 songs, working with a wide range of composers -- Jerome Kern, Cy Coleman, and Jimmy McHugh among them. Fields' songs include such standards as "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "Pick Yourself Up." The Great Lyricists series devotes a volume to Fields; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Iris Murdoch: The Sea, the Sea On this day in 1919, Iris Murdoch was born. In more than two dozen novels, Murdoch explored the lives and moral dilemmas of her characters, often writers or other intellectuals. She wrote in a variety of styles, from light comedy to Gothic romance. Murdoch's 1978 novel, The Sea, the Sea, won the Booker Prize; it's the story of an aging playwright who becomes obsessed after an accidental meeting with a childhood sweetheart. The Sea, the Sea is available as an e-book from OverDrive or in print.
Harrison Birtwistle: The Triumph of Time And on this day in 1934, Harrison Birtwistle was born. Birtwistle writes challenging music, often with a strong emphasis of rhythm. He is a prolific composer who has written more than a dozen operas and large amounts of symphonic, chamber, and vocal music. Three of his major orchestral pieces -- The Triumph of Time, Earth Dances, and the saxophone concerto Panic -- are available for streaming at Hoopla.
