Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Leo Braudy: The Hollywood Sign On this day in 1923, the Hollywood sign was dedicated. It originally read "Hollywoodland," and was designed as advertising for a new housing development. The sign had only been intended to remain in place for a year or two, but so quickly became a symbol of the movie industry that it was left in place. It deteriorated badly over the years, and underwent major restoration in 1978 after a fund-raising campaign led by Hugh Hefner. Leo Braudy's The Hollywood Sign explores the history and cultural significance of the landmark.
Carlo Bergonzi: Italian Songs On this day in 1924, Carlo Bergonzi was born. He began his operatic career as a baritone, but quickly realized that he was better suited to the tenor repertoire. His career lasted for more than forty years, and his performances in Verdi operas were particularly well regarded. His collection of Italian songs is available for streaming and download at Freegal.
Say Anything And on this day in 1957, Cameron Crowe was born. As a writer for Rolling Stone, Crowe went on tour with the Allman Brothers Band when he was 16; that experience would be transformed into his movie Almost Famous. He broke into the movies by writing Fast Times at Ridgemont High, also based on his own experience of going undercover as a high school student when in his early 20s. Several of his movies are available in our collection on DVD, including Say Anything, Elizabethtown, and We Bought a Zoo.
