Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Scriabin: Symphonies #1, #2, #3 On this day in 1872, Alexander Scriabin was born. Scriabin wrote almost exclusively for either orchestra or for solo piano, and his music has taken dramatic swings in and out of critical favor in the century since his death. In the 1930s, the BBC refused to play his music, calling it "evil;"in recent years, his music, particularly the symphonies and the piano sonatas, have gained in popularity. Scriabin's three symphonies are available for streaming at Hoopla.
Kahlil Gibran: The Prophet On this day in 1883, Kahlil Gibran was born. The Lebanese-American writer is best known for The Prophet, a collection of poetic essays that combine musings on the human condition and inspirational prose, tinged with Gibran's eclectic blend of mysticism and Christianity. The Prophet has never gone out of print since it was published in 1923, and found new popularity with the 1960s counterculture and the 1970s New Age movement. The Prophet is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, and in print.
Earl Scruggs And on this day in 1924, Earl Scruggs was born. Scruggs was a banjo player who came to prominence as a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in the late 1940s. As a solo performer, and in partnership with guitarist Lester Flatt, Scruggs was a leader in the popularization of bluegrass in the 1950s and 1960s. Flatt and Scruggs' biggest impact on popular culture may have been as the performers of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," the theme song for the 1960s sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. Several of Scruggs' albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
