In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

The Curse of the Gothic Symphony On this day in 1876, Havergal Brian was born. The British composer was quite productive, writing 32 symphonies, and remarkably persistent in his artistic endeavors despite the fact that his music was rarely performed during his lifetime. That was, in part, because he tended to write very large pieces. Brian's first symphony, known as "The Gothic," lasts for nearly two hours, and calls for a massive orchestra and 5 separate choruses. The Gothic Symphony was completed in 1927, but not performed until 1961; there have been fewer than a dozen performances. The Curse of the Gothic Symphony is a dramatized documentary about the efforts of one Australian orchestra to organize a performance of the piece.
Oprah Winfrey: What I Know For Sure On this day in 1954, Oprah Winfrey was born. For 25 years, Winfrey hosted The Oprah Winfrey Show, bringing the energy and emotional intimacy of personal confessions -- both her guests' and her own -- to the talk show format. Winfrey is routinely at the top of lists of America's most popular and influential women. Her recommendations can turn a book into a bestseller or a movie into a hit, and her open acceptance of the LGBT community on her show helped lead the way to greater media visibility and publc acceptance. Winfrey's What I Know for Sure collects columns from her O, the Oprah Magazine; it's available as an e-book or        e-audio from OverDrive, in print, and as an audiobook
Greg Louganis: Breaking the Silence And on this day in 1960, Greg Louganis was born. He is the only man in Olympic history to win gold in both diving events at two consecutive Olympic Games, at Los Angeles in 1984 and at Seoul in 1988. In 1995, Louganis announced that he was HIV-positive, and he has been a vocal advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and the rights of those with HIV/AIDS. Louganis's memoir, Breaking the Surface, is available as an e-book from OverDrive.
