On this day in 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. For more than 300 years, Mozart has been acknowledged as one of the finest composers who ever lived. He wrote more than 600 pieces of music, and made significant contributions to virtually every major form of classical music -- symphony, opera, piano music, choral music, string quartet. You can begin to explore his enormous body of work with selections from the Complete Mozart Edition, available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1921, Donna Reed was born. During her forty-year career, Reed starred in such classic films as It's a Wonderful Life and From Here to Eternity. She is perhaps best remembered, though, for her television sitcom, The Donna Reed Show, which ran for eight seasons. By the end of the show in the mid-1960s, there was criticism of the show from some feminists, who argued against the show's portrayal of Reed as a traditional housewive. Reed always defended the show and her character, saying that "a strong woman who could manage her family" was in no way opposed to feminist ideals. The first three seasons of The Donna Reed Show are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1930, Bobby Bland was born. From the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, Bland was a regular on the R&B charts with songs like "Farther Up the Road," "I PIty the Fool," and "Turn On Your Love Light." He began his career singing with gospel groups in Memphis, and brought that style and passion into his career as a blues singer. A selection of Bland's albums is available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
