In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Esquivel: Cabaret Manana On this day in 1918, Juan Garcia Esquivel was born. The Mexican bandleader and composer, often known by just his last name, was a leading performer of late 1950s/early 1960s lounge music, mixing instrumental jazz and pop with Latin music. Esquivel's music was particularly notable for his piano solos and his frequent use of exotic percussion and wordless choral vocals. Interest in Esquivel's music was revived in the 1990s when several compilations of his music were released. Some of Esquivel's albums are available for download or streaming at Freegal.
Lost Highway On this day in 1946, David Lynch was born. Lynch is a director whose movies frequently contain surreal elements, and whose plots are often non-linear and puzzling. Films like Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire seem to have a dreamy logic of their own. His biggest mainstream successes have come with offbeat crime stories -- Blue Velvet and the TV series Twin Peaks (which will be revived later this year, with Lynch directing). Lynch's 1997 thriller Lost Highway combines elements of psychological suspense, film noir, and Lynch's dream-world surrealism; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Nancy Kress: Beggars in Spain And on this day in 1948, Nancy Kress was born. She is a science fiction writer whose stories have won most of the major awards in her field. Kress also writes regularly for Wrtier's Digest magazine, and has published several collections of how-to advice for writers. Her fiction tends to be set in the near future, and often deals with the impact of very plausible technological change on daily life. Kress's 1993 novel Beggars in Spain is the first in a series exploring the ramifications of genetic modification that allows some people to go entirely without sleep; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
