On this day in 1908, Ethel Merman was born. Merman's Broadway career began in 1930 with the Gershwin musical Girl Crazy (in which she introduced the song "I Got Rhythm"), and ended in 1970 when she joined the cast of Hello, Dolly! During those 40 years, she was the queen of musical theater, and the first to perform such standards as "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and "There's No Business Like Show Business." On this day in 1924, Katy Jurado was born. Jurado became a star of Mexican cinema in the 1940s, and frequently starred in Hollywood westerns of the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in such classics as High Noon and One-Eyed Jacks. She was the first Latina actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, in the 1954 film Broken Lance. Jurado continued to work regularly in both American and Mexican films until her death in 2002. And on this day in 1948, Ruth Reichl was born. Reichl is a food writer and critic who worked at the Los Angeles Times from 1984 to 1993 before becoming restaurant critic for the New York Times; she was the editor of Gourmet for a decade, before that magazine ceased publication in 2009. Reichl has written several volumes of memoirs; Garlic and Sapphires focuses specifically on her years as a restaurant critic and the lengths to which she sometimes went to disguise her identity.
