In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Ron Chernow: Alexander Hamilton On this day in 1755, Alexander Hamilton was born. Hamilton was a participant in the Philadelphia Convention that wrote the United States Constitution, and he wrote most of The Federalist Papers, a series of essays arguing in favor of ratification of the Constitution. Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury, arguing in favor of creating a national bank and establishing the U.S. Mint. Hamilton is currently having a pop-culture moment, as the Broadway musical Hamilton tells the story of his life. Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, the principal source material for that musical, is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Gliere & Glazunov: Concertos On this day in 1875, Reinhold Gliere was born. The Russian composer is best known for the "Russian Sailor's Dance" from his ballet The Red Poppy. Gliere's music is unabashedly nationalistic; his third symphony is inspired by the life of the Russian hero Ilya Muromets, and he wrote pieces to commemorate the Red Army and the anniversary of the Soviet Constitution. A pair of Gliere concertos for unusual soloists -- harp and coloratura soprano -- are available for streaming at Hoopla.
Once Upon a Mattress And on this day in 1931, Mary Rodgers was born. She briefly followed in the footsteps of her father, Richard Rodgers, as a Broadway composer; Mary had only one big success, but it was an enduring one. Once Upon a Mattress, a variation on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea," made Carol Burnett a star in its original 1959 run. It's been filmed for television three times, and is a favorite of high school and community theater groups. The cast recording of the 1996 Broadway revival features Sarah Jessica Parker; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal.
