On this day in 1909, Grazyna Bacewicz was born. In the 1930s, Bacewicz was a gifted violinist, and much of her early music as a composer was for the violin. She quickly broadened her interest to other forms, and became a full-time composer in the mid-1950s, after suffering injuries in an auto accident. Bacewicz's music was mostly in a neo-Classical style, with some brief experiments in serialism. Her second piano sonata and two piano quintets are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1914, William S. Burroughs was born. Burroughs was one of the leading authors of the Beat Generation, and his writing was strongly influential in the 1960s counterculture. His 1959 novel Naked Lunch, was controversial both for its non-linear narrative and for its obscene language. It was the subject of an obscenity trial in Massachusetts, where the state's Supreme Court ruled that it had sufficient social value to be deemed not obscene. Naked Lunch is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook. |

And on this day in 1943, Michael Mann was born. After beginning his career in television on such shows as Police Story and Miami Vice, Mann turned to feature films. He is not a prolific director, having made only 11 films in 35 years, but his body of work includes such critically acclaimed movies as The Last of the Mohicans, Ali, and Collateral. Mann's 1981 debut, Thief, stars James Caan as a jewel thief trying to settle into the routine of family life; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |
