On this day in 1913, Rosa Parks was born. Parks became an icon of the civil rights movement when, in 1955, she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white passenger. There had been similar protests in other cities, but civil rights organizers believed that Parks would be the ideal plaintiff for a legal challenge against segregation; she was seen as a responsible family woman with a solid reputation in the community. Parks' legal case was delayed in state courts long enough that another case made it to the Supreme Court first, but her action was an important step in drawing attention to the unjust policies of segregation. In At the Dark End of the Street, Danielle L. Maguire examines Parks' history of civil rights activism, which began well before her famous bus protest; it's available as an e-book at OverDrive |
