Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Steve Silberman: NeuroTribes On this day in 1906, Hans Asperger was born. In 1944, the Austrian pediatrician published a paper identifying many of the behaviors associated with the condition that would be named for him -- Asperger syndrome. His work was largely ignored at the time, but in the last 40 years, as study into autism and related conditions has increased, Asperger has been increasingly recognized as a pioneer in the field. Steve Silberman's NeuroTribes is a thorough, accessible history of autism from Asperger and his predecessors to the present day; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Pee Wee King: Country Cowboy Classics On this day in 1914, Pee Wee King was born. King was a popular country music singer in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Today, he's best remembered as the co-writer of two pop standards, "You Belong to Me" and "The Tennessee Waltz." He was also among the first to popularize the rhinestone-covered "Nudie Suits" that were popular with many country singers in the mid-20th century. A selection of King's albums is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Yoko Ono: Yes, I'm a Witch And on this day in 1933, Yoko Ono was born. Ono will probably always be first remembered as the widow of John Lennon, but she has had a long career as a singer, artist, filmmaker and activist in her own right. Over the last decade, her music has been particularly popular in dance clubs. The 2007 album Yes, I'm a Witch features remixes by a variety of artists of songs from Ono's back catalogue; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
