In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Lonely Are the Brave On this day in 1905, Dalton Trumbo was born; and on this day in 1916, Kirk Douglas was born. Their careers crossed paths with the 1960 film Spartacus, which Douglas produced and starred in. He hired Trumbo to write the screenplay, and insisted that Trumbo be given credit for his work. That credit helped to break the McCarthy-era blacklist against Trumbo and other writers and actors suspected of being Communist sympathizers. Trumbo and Douglas teamed again for the 1962 western Lonely Are the Brave, which is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Donald Byrd: Devil Whip On this day in 1932, Donald Byrd was born. The pianist was playing with Lionel Hampton before he finished high school, and leading his own band by the late 1950s. Byrd was an important mentor to Herbie Hancock, and in the late 1960s and 1970s, among the pioneers of jazz fusion. Several of Byrd's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
John M. Heisman: Heisman: The Man Behind the Trophy And on this day in 1935, the Downtown Athletic Club made its first annual selection of the most valuable college football player in America; the award would become known as the Heisman Trophy after the death of the club's athletic director, John W. Heisman. The first winner was Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago; Ohio State's Archie Griffin is the only player ever to win the Heisman twice. Heisman's great-nephew, John M. Heisman, tells the story of Heisman's life and the trophy named in his honor in Heisman: The Man Behind the Trophy. It's available in print.
