In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

L.A. Theatre Works: A Doll's House On this day in 1879, Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House was first performed. The play challenges the traditional roles of men and woman within marriage, which made it somewhat scandalous at the time. Ibsen claimed that the play was not consciously meant as a feminist statement, and that the struggle of its heroine to find her place in society was a struggle that we all must go through, regardless of gender. The L.A. Theatre Works production of the play, starring Calista Flockhart, is available for streaming as an e-audio at OverDrive.
On Golden Pond On this day in 1937, Jane Fonda was born. From the 1960s through the 1980s, Fonda was one of our busiest and most acclaimed actresses, starring in such films as Klute, Coming Home, and The China Syndrome. She took a fifteen-year break from acting, but returned to the movies in 2005, and continues to work steadily. Fonda stars in the 1981 film On Golden Pond with her father, Henry, and Katharine Hepburn; the movie is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Frank Zappa And on this day in 1940, Frank Zappa was born. For nearly thirty years, Zappa and his band, the Mothers of Invention, made eccentric rock music for a small but passionately loyal audience. Zappa's biggest commercial success came with the 1982 song "Valley Girl," which had the unfortunate effect of making many think of him as a novelty act. Zappa also wrote orchestral music, which was just as experimental as his rock music was. A selection of Zappa's music is available for streaming at Hoopla.
