Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. On this day in 1749, Domenico Cimarosa was born. Cimarosa was among the most respected operatic composers of his day; his masterpiece, Il matrimonio segreto (The secret marriage), was considered by Verdi to be the ideal comic opera. Cimarosa was highly prolific, writing more than 80 operas before his death at the relatively young age of 52. Il matrimonio segreto is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1892, the first issue of Vogue was published; the magazine began as a weekly newspaper. The focus, even then, was on fashion, though there was coverage of sports and New York society intended to draw male readers. In recent years, Vogue has made a deliberate effort to promote helthy body images for women, and moved away from focusing on only the very slimmest fashion models. Current and recent issues of Vogue are available at Zinio; the documentary The September Issue, which follows the magazine's staff as they assemble an issue, is available on DVD. |

And on this day in 1894, Arthur Fiedler was born. From 1930 until his death in 1979, Fiedler was the director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, which specialized in light classics and orchestral versions of popular music. The orchestra was featured in a long-running PBS series, Evening at Pops; Fiedler and the Pops also recorded dozens of albums during his tenure, performing everything from Tchaikovsky to disco. Several of Fiedler's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
