In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings: The Yearling On this day in 1896, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was born. Rawlings was a writer of novels and short stories, many of them based on her life in rural Florida. She was blunt in her depictions of her neighbors, one of whom sued over the harshness of Rawlings' portrayal. Rawlings was a successful writer for twenty years. Her most enduring work is The Yearling, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and made into a popular movie in 1946; it's the story of a Florida boy and his pet deer. The Yearling is available as an      e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Jolivet: Orchestral and Chamber Music On this day in 1905, André Jolivet was born. The French composer went through a variety of stylistic changes during his career. His early music was mostly atonal, strongly influenced by Schoenberg and Varèse, but he would eventually move to a more tonal, melodic style, and incorporate influences from the music he heard in his frequent travels around the world. A large sampling of Jolivet's music, including most of his concertos and several chamber pieces, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Benny Carter: Cosmopolite And on this day in 1907, Benny Carter was born. Carter was a multi-talented jazz musician. He played trumpet, saxophone, and clarinet, wrote songs, and was a skilled arranger. Carter's career was unusually long, stretching from his first recordings in 1928 to his final album in 2002. He was also a pioneer in Hollywood, as one of the first African-Americans to write music for films. Several albums by Carter are available for streaming at Hoopla.
