On this day in 1809, Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born. Tennyson's first poems were published when he was only 18. He served as the British Poet Laureate for 42 years, the longest tenure of anyone in that position. Tennyson was the first writer to be honored for his work by being made a Lord. An e-audio collection of Tennyson's poetry is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1911, Lucille Ball was born. She began working in small movie roles in the 1930s, but it was the premiere of the TV show I Love Lucy in 1951 that would make her a star. Ball was TV's first superstar; she appeared on the cover of TV Guide 39 times, more than anyone else. Many television production techniques that are now standard were developed by Ball for the production of I Love Lucy; it was the first show to be filmed in front of a live audience. She returned to television frequently after I Love Lucy; the first three seasons of her late 1960s series Here's Lucy are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1930, Abbey Lincoln was born. As a singer, Lincoln was influenced by Billie Holiday, and was widely praised for her albums in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For much of the 60s and 70s, she devoted her time to acting, appearing in several critically acclaimed films. After withdrawing from public life for a time, she returned to music with a series of highly regarded albums in the 1990s. Several of her albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
