Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We'll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material -- e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamble music and film -- but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Marilynne K. Roach: Six Women of Salem On this day in 1692, five people were executed as part of the Salem Witch Trials. In all, 20 people were executed as a result of these prosecutions for witchcraft; five others, including an infant, died in prison. Most of those executed were women, and Marilynne K. Roach tells the story of the trials by focusing on some of their stories in Six Women of Salem. It's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
George Enescu: Three Symphonies On this day in 1881, George Enescu was born. The Romanian composer was a child prodigy; his earliest surviving composition is a piece for violin and piano written at the age of 5. At 7, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory, from which he graduated at 13. His music is strongly influenced by Romanian folk music. Enescu's three symphonies are available for streaming at Hoopla.
Hal Vaughan: Sleeping With the Enemy And on this day in 1883, Coco Chanel was born. The designer brought a casual elegance to women's fashion, and has been a cultural icon for decades, appearing as a central character in novels, films, and even a Broadway musical. Recently discovered documents suggest that she worked as an agent for the Nazis during the German occupation of France. That part of Chanel's story is told by Hal Vaughan in Sleeping With the Enemy. It's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
