On this day in 1750, Antonio Salieri was born. His public image these days is that of Mozart's jealous rival from the play and movie Amadeus, but he was a respected composer who wrote more than 30 operas and greatly influenced his contemporaries. He was also a highly regarded teacher, whose pupils included Liszt, Beethoven, and Schubert. Salieri's opera Les Danaïdes is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1774, Meriwether Lewis was born. With William Clark, Lewis led the expedition that President Jefferson sent to explore the Louisiana Purchase, and to make claim on the Northwest Territory for the United States. The two-year expedition was a great success, and Jefferson rewarded Lewis by appointing him governor of the Louisiana Territory. Ken Burns' documentary on the expedition, Lewis & Clark, is available for streaming at Hoopla, or on DVD. |

And on this day in 1920, Shelley Winters was born. Winters broke into Hollywood as another blonde bombshell, but found stardom by deliberately rejecting that image and playing less glamorous characters. She was in the spotlight as much for her turbulent personal life -- she was married four times -- and opinionated interviews, as for her formidable talent. She won the Academy Award twice, and donated her trophy for The Diary of Anne Frank to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. The Diary of Anne Frank is available on DVD. |
