Today, ON THIS DAY observes World Elephant Day, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants.

Of Oozies and ElephantsIn Myanmar, elephants are used for logging; the men who work with those elephants are called oozies. The documentary Of Oozies and Elephants observes the work of these loggers, and the ways in which they work to preserve the local forests. We also follow the scientists who are working on elephant preservation, both in Myanmar and throughout Asia. Of Oozies and Elephants is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Vicki Constantine Croke: Elephant CompanyVicki Constantine Croke's Elephant Company takes part in the same region of the world, in what was then colonial Burma, where Billy Williams, a British veteran of World War I, learned to work with and care for elephants. When the Japanese invaded Burma during World War II, "Elephant Bill" and his elephants were called upon to aid the British military. Elephant Company is available as an e-book from OverDrive, and in print.
Babar: The MovieFor more than 80 years, Jean de Brunhoff's creation, Babar the Elephant, has been delighting children. In dozens of books by  Brunhoff, and later, by his son Laurent, King Babar and Queen Celeste rule over the elephants and raise their children, having adventures and teaching valuable lessons. In the 1989 animated musical Babar: The Movie, Babar tells his children the story of how he came to be King of the Elephants; the movie is available for streaming at Hoopla.
