On this day in 1942, actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil were granted a patent for a new method of transmitting radio signals that they hoped would allow radio-controlled torpedoes to be used without being jammed by the enemy. The technology was not used in that way until the 1960s, but it proved to be useful in the development of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other modern communications technologies. Richard Rhodes presents Lamarr's lesser-known career as an inventor in Hedy's Folly, available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print. |
