Bach: St. John Passion On this day in 1724, Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion was performed for the first time at the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, Germany. This re-telling of the Easter story is considered one of the great works of sacred choral music. Bach revised the work several times, but the original 1724 version is the most frequently performed. The St. John Passion is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Billie Holiday: The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 1945-1959 On this day in 1915, Billie Holiday was born. Holiday was singing in New York jazz clubs by the time she was 14, and made her first record at 18. Her recordings from the 1930s and 1940s are legendary, and she is among the most influential jazz singers of all time. A wide selection of Holiday's music can be heard on The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 1945-1959; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Roger Ebert's Four-Star Reviews 1967-2007 On this day in 1967, Roger Ebert's first film review was published in the Chicago Sun-Times; the French New Wave movie Galia received 2 1/2 stars. Ebert would write for the Sun-Times for the next 45 years, becoming one of the best-known film critics in America. With partner Gene Siskel, he hosted several different weekly TV shows of film reviews for more than 20 years. In 1975, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Forty years of Ebert's highest praise are collected in Four-Star Reviews 1967-2007; it's available as an e-book at OverDrive.
