In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

A Tale of Winter On this day in 1920, Éric Rohmer was born. One of the last prominent directors of the French New Wave, Rohmer was known for his distinctive style; he liked to work with non-professional actors, avoided closeups, and rarely used a musical soundtrack. His characters were generally young, and given to long conversations. A Tale of Winter is part of Rohmer's "Tales of the Four Seasons" series from the 1990s; it's available for screening at Hoopla.
Elmer Bernstein: Walk on the Wild Side On this day in 1922, Elmer Bernstein was born. Bernstein wrote the scores for dozens of TV shows and movies, including The Magnificent Seven and To Kill a Mockingbird. Bernstein worked mostly in drama until John Landis hired him to write the score to Animal House, thinking that Bernstein's dramatic style would only make the movie funnier; that led to a second phase in his career, scoring comedies such as Stripes and Ghostbusters. Several of Bernstein's scores are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Maya Angelou: The Complete Poetry And on this day in 1928, Maya Angelou was born. She is the author of seven volumes of autobiography and several volumes of poetry and essays, but before her first book was ever published, she had lived a varied artistic life. In the mid-1950s, she sang and danced in San Francisco nightclubs, eventually recording an album of her own calypso songs. In 1961, she was part of the long-running off-Broadway production of Jean Genet's The Blacks, with Cicely Tyson and James Earl Jones. And for several years, she lived in Ghana, where she worked as a print and radio journalist. The Complete Poetry is available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
