Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

The Day of the JackalOn this day in 1907, Fred Zinnemann was born. Zinnemann directed only about two dozen films in his 50-year career, but many of them are classics: High Noon, Julia, A Man for All Seasons, From Here to Eternity. He generally preferred stories about people whose principles are challenged by difficult moral dilemmas. Zinnemann's 1973 thriller The Day of the Jackal is the story of an attempt to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Island SongsOn this day in 1929, Peter Sculthorpe was born. The Australian composer was best known for his orchestral and chamber music, and was noted for his frequent use of large percussion sections. His later music is often influcenced by Aboriginal themes and instruments. Sculthorpe's "Island Songs" is one of several Australian saxophone concertos available for streaming or download at Freegal; his String Quartet #8 is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Tammi TerrellAnd on this day in 1945, Tammi Terrell was born. Terrell was a Motown singer in the late 1960s, best known for a series of duets with Marvin Gaye ("You're All I Need to Get By," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing"). Terrell's career was tragically cut short by a brain tumor; she died at the age of 24. Terrell's complete work, both solo and with Gaye, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
