On This Day: April 27

Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Tim LaHaye & Jerry B. Jenkins: Left Behind On this day in 1926, Tim La Haye was born. LaHaye is an evangelical minister best known as the co-author (with Jerry B. Jenkins) of the Left Behind series of novels, which imagine life after the Biblical Rapture. The 12-book series has inspired three prequels, a series of YA novels, and adaptations in the form of movies, video games, and graphic novels. The full 12-book series is available as an e-book collection from OverDrive.
The Mathematics of Games and Puzzles April is Mathematics Awareness Month, sponsored each year by four major professional associations of mathematicians and statisticians. The theme for this year's observance is "The Future of Prediction," an exploration of how mathematics and statistics help to shape the future. To understand how mathematics plays out in your daily life, enjoy the Great Courses lecture series, The Mathematics of Games and Puzzles, which is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Luis J. Rodriguez: My Nature Is Hunger

April is also National Poetry Month, organized since 1996 by the Academy of American Poets in order to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry. From our large poetry collection, we suggest collections by our Poets Laureate, from local to national:

Notes on the Assemblage, by United States Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, is available in print.

Disappearing Ink, a collection of essays and criticism by California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia, is available in print.

And My Nature Is Hunger, by Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez, is available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
