On this day in 1792, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle wrote a song intended as a rallying cry to French troops after the country had declared war against Austria. The song would become known as "La Marseillaise," and it would officially become France's national anthem in 1795. "La Marseillaise" and more than 200 other national anthems can be heard in a 6-volume collection, available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

On this day in 1917, Ella Fitzgerald was born. For nearly sixty years, Fitzgerald was among America's finest jazz singers, noted for the clarity of her enunciation and for her improvisational skills. Among her recordings was a series of eight "Song Book" albums recorded between 1956 and 1964, each devoted to the work of a great American songwriter -- Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, etc. The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1930, Paul Mazursky was born. Mazursky was a writer and director who made a series of successful dramatic comedies in the 1970s and 1980s. In movies like An Unmarried Woman, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, and Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Mazursky explored the social issues and challenges of the era. His 1988 film Moon Over Parador is a slightly broader comedy than his usual, a political farce in which an actor is forced to pretend to be the president of a small South American country in order to keep the president's death a secret; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |
