Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Anthony Trollope: Can You Forgive Her? On this day in 1815, Anthony Trollope was born. Trollope was one of England's most popular novelists during the Victorian era, and his books are still widely read today. He is best known for two series of novels set in the fictional county of Barsetshire. The "Chronicles of Barsetshire" focus on the social and romantic relationships; the Palliser novels focus largely on English and Irish politics, as seen through the eyes of one bureaucrat. The first of the Palliser novels is Can You Forgive Her? It's one of several books in which Trollope displays an awareness, unusual for his era, of the limited roles available for women; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
House on Haunted Hill On this day in 1914, William Castle was born. Castle was a producer and director best remembered for a series of inexpensive horror thrillers from the late 1950s and 1960s, each of which usually came with a gimmick to draw the audience. The audience might be asked to vote on the villain's fate (Mr. Sardonicus), or seats might be connected to vibrating motors which are turned on as the monster nears (The Tingler). House on Haunted Hill was filmed in "Emergo," which meant that a skeleton would fly above the audience's head on wires at some screenings. The movie, which stars Vincent Price as an eccentric millionaire, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits And on this day in 1942, Barbra Streisand was born. Streisand is an actress, singer, and director who has been an iconic presence in American entertainment for more than 50 years. She is among the few entertainers to have won Emmy, Oscar, Grammy, and Tony awards, and has also received the Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Peabody Award. Several of Streisand's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
