Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Ngaio Marsh: A Man Lay Dead On this day in 1895, Ngaio Marsh was born. Between 1934 and 1982, Marsh wrote 32 mystery novels featuring London policeman Roderick Alleyn. In her home of New Zealand, Marsh was also known as a theatrical director; several of the Alleyn mysteries involve theater and actors. In A Man Lay Dead, the first of the series, a "murder game" party goes awry when one of the guests is found with a real dagger in his back; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive.
The Little Princess On this day in 1928, Shirley Temple was born. In the late 1930s, Temple was among the biggest movie stars in America. She sang, danced, and acted with the charm and poise of any of her adult co-stars, and was the first receipient of the special Juvenile Academy Award in 1935. Her films were less popular once she reached adolescence, and Temple retired from the movies at the age of 22. As an adult (and now named Shirley Temple Black), she had a distinguished career in foreign service, serving as the United States Ambassador to Ghana, and later to Czechoslovakia. Temple's first film in color, 1939's The Little Princess, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Roy Orbison: Black and White Night And on this day in 1936, Roy Orbison was born. Orbison's wide range, operatic voice, and impassioned delivery made him a pop star in the early 1960s, with hits like "Running Scared" and "In Dreams." He would enjoy a comeback in the years before his death in 1988, both as a solo artist and as a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. Several Orbison albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
