On this day in 1922, Charles Mingus was born. Mingus was a jazz composer and bandleader who flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. He is considered one of the most virtuosic bass players ever, and many of his compositions were written with the skills and personalities of specific members of his bands in mind. Mingus was a prolific musician, recording 30 albums in the decade between 1955 and 1965. Several of Mingus's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

On this day in 1937, Jack Nicholson was born. Nicholson has been one of Hollywood's most acclaimed actors for more than forty years. He's been nominated for the Academy Award twelve times, more than any other male actor, for films that include Easy Rider, Chinatown, Reds, Terms of Endearment, and A Few Good Men. In the early years of his career, he acted in several films made by low-budget indie producer Roger Corman; in Corman's 1963 production, The Terror, Nicholson stars as a French soldier caught up in a mysterious ghost story. The Terror is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1943, Janet Evanovich was born. After writing a dozen romance novels under the pen name Steffie Hall, Evanovich realized that she enjoyed writing the action scenes more than the romantic ones. That led to the creation of Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, who is the heroine of (so far) twenty-three novels. That's only about half of her books; Evanovich is a prolific author who works on several other series, some with co-authors. One for the Money, the first Stephanie Plum novel, is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook; the 2012 film adaptation starring Katherine Heigl is available on DVD. |
