Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1816, Charlotte Brontë was born. She was the eldest of the three literary Brontë sisters, whose few novels -- only seven among the three authors -- are classics of English literature. Brontë's first novel, Jane Eyre, was her most successful. It was originally published under the pseudonym Currer Bell, and was well received by critics of the day. Brontë's story of a shy, plain governess who falls in love with her mysterious employer continues to be popular today. It's been adapted at least a dozen times for film and televsion (and that's just the English language versions), as a ballet, a musical, and two different operas. Jane Eyre is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook. |

On this day in 1932, Elaine May was born. May first came to public notice in the late 1950s, working as a comedy team with Mike Nichols. Their act, an evening of two-person sketch comedy, was successful enough that it played on Broadway in 1960. When Nichols and May decided to break up the act, May went on to write plays and movies, occasionally acting and directing as well. Her screenplays have twice been nominated for Academy Awards; one of those nominations was for Primary Colors, a political comedy inspired by Bill and Hillary Clinton. Primary Colors is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1947, Iggy Pop was born. Pop was the lead singer of the Stooges, a proto-punk band who performed from 1967 to 1974, and re-united in 2003. The Stooges were not hugely successful in their day, but would prove to be greatly influential on many of the punk rockers who followed them. Pop's songs, both from his years with the Stooges and from his solo career, have frequently popped up in movie and TV soundtracks -- "Lust for Life" and "Real Wild Child," for instance -- making them better known today than they were when originally released. Several of Pop's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
