Description:

This NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a FREE, 12-week course for families and close friends of individuals with brain disorders called mental illness. This course is taught by a trained representative from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org). Course topics covered include the following:

  • Current evidence-based research findings about severe mental illnesses,
  • Family responses to the trauma of mental illness,
  • Diagnosis, symptoms and medication overview,
  • Listening and Communication Techniques,
  • Acquiring strategies for handling crisis and relapse,
  • Focusing on care for the caregiver,
  • Coping with worry, stress, and emotional overload,
  • Guidance on locating appropriate support services within the Westside Los Angeles community, and
  • advocacy initiatives for fighting stigmas.

Classes are Wednesdays beginning September 25, 2013 to December 11, 2013 from 4:30 PM until 7:30 PM. Classes will be held in the meeting room of the West L.A.
