Description:

In a presentation entitled, "Music from the Soul," Charles Porter, a descendant of the free Black community in southern New Jersey, will share his research regarding the effect of African music on American music and in the Black Diaspora.  He will present a brief history of the phases of Hip-Hop; talk about the precursors to rap in black oral expressions; discuss the similarities between Hip-hop and the blues, relating it to the precursors of the blues such as banjo, work songs, ring shouts, jug bands, etc.; and expand upon the instruments, style, philosophy and context of the African roots of the blues and Black musical/oral expressions.  He will also demonstrate with a few instruments and musical selections, with a questions and answers portion at the end of his presentation.
