“Dainty” Dorothy Poynton began diving at the age of seven when her family moved to Los Angeles. At 13 she was the youngest American team member at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympics where she won the silver medal in springboard diving. Poyton won a gold medal in 1932 for this perfectly executed dive.

The eight-oar championship drew an overwhelming crowd of 150,000 to the banks of the Long beach Marina. For the climax of the Regatta, the American team beat Italy across the finish line - by a fifth of a second.

America's Angelita beats Canada's Santa Maria. Lt. Pahud de Mortanges, a veteran and gold medal winner.

America's Angelita, skippered by Owen Churchill, beats Canada's Santa Maria across the finish line in the tryouts for the International Eight Meter Yachting race off of Point Fermin. The Angelita won the twelve mile Olympic event by 43 seconds. The Angelita was refurbished and used as the Olympic Yachting Flagship for the 1984 games.

Lt. Pahud de Mortanges (Holland), a veteran and gold medal winner from the previous two Olympics, scores his record fourth gold medal on his horse “Macroix.”
