We're partnering with creative individuals, institutions and organizations to bring unique and free science programs to a library near you!

See below for program descriptions and schedules - and check the calendar for all our science programs for kids and teens.  Contact your local library for more information, to confirm the schedule and to register.

Collaborative Lego Mural with Adam Ward

In this intense and creative workshop, kids will use math, engineering and design skills to plan and build a 2' x 3' "mural" out of Lego bricks that will be displayed in the library for all to admire.  For ages 8 - 13.  Families welcome!  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Draw Music with the Drawdio! with LA Makerspace

The Drawdio is a miniature musical synthesizer built onto a pencil.  It senses electrical resistance between the handle of the pencil and tip, making low and high-pitched sounds.  Participants will build and take home their very own Drawdio.  For ages 10 - 13.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

E-Textiles with The Exploratory

E-Textiles (Electronic textiles) uses conductive thread to add electronic components to fabrics.  In this 4-session series, kids incorporate electronics with hand-sewing and needle felting to make jewelry, light cuffs, wool paintings and stuffed animals with LED lights - while learning about simple and complex circuits and much more.  For ages 8 - 13.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Family Science Course with Iridescent Learning

In single-session and 5-session workshops, families learn about scientific concepts the way real scientists do - by observing, making predictions, and testing theories.  That might mean making a volcano, launching a rocket, inventing a submarine, building a rollercoaster - and more.  For ages 8 - 13.  Families welcome!  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Open Lab with DIY Girls

Kids and parents are invited to acquire new technical skills and science knowledge while building community.  Every month, 3 different stations will allow families to try their hands at everything from electronics to printmaking to programming - and much more.  For ages 8 - 13.  Families welcome!

Photo Stories with Venice Arts

In this 4-session workshop, students will explore the link between visual and written narratives, while developing skills in visual literacy, digital media, and technology.  Each participant will create a visual digital and/or physical narrative based on a favorite book, a family story, etc.  For ages 10 - 13.  Families welcome!  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Robotics with LA Makerspace

Using simple household objects, creativity and some new knowledge about electrical currents and physics, participants will create customized robots to race against each other and then take home.  Three different sessions are available.  For ages 12 and up.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Robotics - Make a Bristlebot!

Using simple household objects, creativity and some new knowledge about electrical currents and physics, participants will create customized mini-robots to race against each other and then take home.  For kids, teens and families.  Open to the first 50 participants.

Science of Art Workshop with LA County Museum of Art

Trained art instructors will explore the intersection of art and science with kids through hands-on lessons that highlight pieces from LACMA's collection and encourage kids to create their own science-based art.  For all ages.  Families welcome!

Scratch with LA Makerspace

In this 4-session series, kids and teens will learn how to use Scratch, a free online tool for making computer games, animations and stories.  All levels welcome!  Computers are provided, but you may bring your own laptop if you want.  For ages 8 to 16.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Secret Agent workshop with WhizGirls

In this 4-week, 8-session series, participants become secret agents on the ultimate mission to build practical, hands-on knowledge about coding, programming and entrepreneurship.  Each kid will learn to build a website from scratch.  For kids ages 10 to 13.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.  Participants should plan to attend all 8 workshops.

Stop-motion Animation Workshop with Freshi Media

In this 4-session workshop, participants are introduced to all the tools necessary to create their own short animated film, learning how to develop a storyboard, animate objects, use a video camera and more.  For kids ages 8 to 13.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

3D Design and Printing with LA Makerspace

3D Design and Printing: Kids will learn the astonishing process of how to create a three-dimensional object out of computer code and then print it out on a 3D printer before their very eyes. For kids ages 10 and up.  Families welcome! Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Van de Graaff Wands with LA Makerspace

Van de Graaff generators are devices that generate static electricity.  Students will build and take home their very own miniature handheld Van de Graaff generators, which can bend thin streams of water, make small particles like salt jump aruond, stick sheets of paper to walls, and other seemingly magical feats using science.  For kids ages 10 and up.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.

Video Library PSA with Mobile Film Classroom

In this 3-session workshop, students will learn the basics of filmmaking by planning, filming and editing a short video that highlights what they love about their library.  For kids ages 10 to 13.  Space is limited; please contact the library to register.
