Purpose:
This guide was developed by the staff of the Los Angeles Public Library in response to requests from patrons for information on how to start a business in Los Angeles.
Scope:
This material is designed to give the entrepreneur basic data on starting a small business within the L.A. city limits, including licenses, permits, utilities, advertising, useful phone numbers and a bibliography of source books for more in-depth information on each topic.
Caveat:
This guide does not give advice. The decision to start a business, the form of organization, the selection of products or services to sell, the location for a business, as well as other decisions are purely a matter of individual judgment. Patrons are urged to seek expert advice as needed.
Arrangement:
This guide is divided into four chapters. The First Chapter provides information needed to get started. The Second Chapter discusses the different ways to organize your business. Chapters Three and Four cover the topics of taxes, licenses, and permits that may be required for a new business. For comments and suggestions, please send e-mail to the Business & Economics Department of the Central Library.
