Geographic Names

In Geographic Names Data Base (only available in Central Library)

You can find geographic information on points on the map in the United States.

Contains information from the United States Geological Survey Topographic maps and other map sources in formats from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000 including the county, the topographic quadrangle the location appears on, elevation if available and latitude and longitude down to the second of degrees.

  • You can search by state and see all the quads for that state.
  • You can search by feature which is like a keyword search i.e. Doodle or Silver Lake or the name of a creek or well or mountain peak.
  • You can search by Feature type and see peaks in Arkansas or streams in Oregon.
  • You can combine all of these factors and search for a particular place i.e. Ca. for state, Silver for feature, and reservoir for feature type.
  • Put in all the terms, hit enter to get number of hits and press F3 to display information.
  • You can search by latitude and longitude if you know it 340532n1181552
  • You can even search by elevation if you know it 449
  • You can search by forest and get names of all quads the forest appears on i.e. Angeles

In National Topographic Names Data Base (only available in Central Library)

  • We can check on the existence and scales of available maps.
  • Type in Glendale and you will see what scales in which it can be found.
  • You can combine a place name and a scale and get an answer as to the availability. i.e. Glendale and 24

In USGS Reference Data Base (only available in Central Library)

  • You will find sources of information used in compiling the databases.
