About the Database
Having commemorated the 150th anniversary of William Mulholland’s birth in September 2005, the Department of Water and Power is continually reminded of its legacy. Embodying this legacy is a rich collection of historical photographs, documenting major events from as early as 1908. Historical records are defined by the City Administrative Code as: "records which depict persons or phenomena which are or have been a part of events or conditions which significantly affect or have affected the City, its functional activities, its heritage, growth and/or development".
There are over 20,000 photos in the historical collection. We have just begun the process to digitize and share our collection with the public. The majority of these photographs reflect the early history of the Department of Water and Power, such as the establishment of the Los Angeles Aqueduct and the work of William Mulholland. Photos are categorized by keywords or events such as “Mulholland” or “aqueduct”.
Researchers are welcome to view the collection in person by appointment only, Monday through Friday, 8am – 3pm. For information and appointments, please contact Angela Tatum at (213) 367-8906.
