She and her husband, the novelist Michael Chabon, live in Berkeley, California, with their four children.

She is also the recipient of a Lannan Foundation Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Edgar Award. Straight was born in Riverside, where she lives with her three daughters and teaches at the University of California.
