Ask the Author (Almost) Anything: Marlene Perez, author of Dead Is Just a Dream
Marlene Perez will be at Teen Book Fest on Saturday, Oct. 12 on the Other Worlds panel in Teen'Scape at 2pm, and on the Make 'Em Laugh panel in Meeting Room A at 3pm. Marlene will be signing copies of Dead Is Just a Dream at 4:00pm in Meeting Room B.
Author of the popular Dead is... series, Marlene Perez writes about the psychic Giordano sisters, residents of Nightshade, California and the mysteries that abound in their community during Daisy & Rose’s High School experience. With a town named Nightshade, are you really surprised to find vampires, zombies, witchcraft and other strange things causing goosebumps at night? I would think twice before drinking the water, just to be on the safe side.
Marlene’s new Dead Is... spin-off/sequel, takes us back to Nightshade High School with a new batch of mysterious mischief and a new heroine, Jessica Walsh, who just happens to live next door to the infamous psychic Giordano sisters. Unfortunately, Jessica isn’t psychic like her neighbors, however, she has a unusual gift/“superpower” that helps her deal with all the paranormal shenanigans happening in Nightshade.
We asked Marlene about zombies, dangerous plants, and the weirdest thing her mom ever found in her bedroom. Here's what she had to say:
1. What is the weirdest thing your Mom ever found in your bedroom?
Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews and my Blythe doll. I loved both of them, but they are a bit odd.
2. If you were a character in a zombie movie, what would happen to you?
I like to think I would be tough, like Emma Stone's character in Zombieland, but I'd probably be zombie chow quickly. They'd probably sneak up on me while I was reading. I am, however, the youngest of twelve, so I do have a few tricks up my sleeve.
3. What is your favorite dangerous plant or animal?
I find plant based poisons interesting, but I don't want to scare anyone by saying they're my FAVORITE.
4. What are one or two books that inspired you when you were a teen?
I loved A Wrinkle in Time, Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Rings when I was younger (still do!).
