Book A Librarian FAQs
The Los Angeles Public Library is pleased to offer a free Book a Librarian service at our Central Library location.
If you feel you need one-on-one help, please submit a request via the Book a Librarian appointment request form for a free half-hour consultation with a subject specialist at Central Library. You will receive a response within 2 business days of your request.
Please note that this is not a research service. It is a reference service designed to guide you to make best use of our databases, collections, and many resources. For quick answers to your questions, feel free to use our Ask a Librarian service.
1. Who is eligible to make an appointment?
This free service is available to anyone. We encourage everyone to sign up for a library card in order to make the best use of our resources and services. Apply for a library card by clicking here.
2. Is there anything I can’t get help with?
This is not a research service. This is a reference service designed to guide you to make the best use of our library resources and collections and get you started on your research.
3. Do you offer instruction with computers or tablets?
We offer Computer Classes at Central Library and our branches which are free and open to the public (please check our online calendar for details). If you need one-on-one help downloading an e-book, or navigating our website, we’re here to help! A librarian can also help you fill out the online appointment request form, should you need guidance.
4. Who will be helping me?
We will look at your appointment request and determine the best person on our staff to help you based on expertise and availability.
5. How long will my appointment be?
Appointments will usually last around 30 minutes. If more time is needed, you may schedule another appointment through our website.
6. How do I make an appointment?
Complete the online appointment request form--available at www.lapl.org/bal or from our home page by clicking on the “Book a Librarian" link, and include as much detail as possible. We will contact you within two business days with more information or to set up an appointment.
7. Where will my appointment take place?
All appointments will take place at Central Library. However, if an e-mail or phone consultation is agreeable and appropriate for both the patron and librarian, an in-person meeting may not be necessary. For most appointments, you will meet with the librarian in one of the subject departments of Central Library.
8. I need to cancel my appointment. What’s the best way to do this?
Please cancel with the librarian with whom you made the appointment. If for some reason you have misplaced this information, please leave a message at (213) 228-7223 or e-mail email@example.com to cancel your appointment.
