Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Lord Is My Shepherd On this day in 1847, the chorus that would become known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir gave its first performance. (The Salt Lake City Tabernacle, from which the group eventually took its name, was not completed for another 20 years.) The Choir records extensively, and performs around the world; they have sung at six presidential inaugurations. Their weekly radio broadcast, Music and the Spoken Word, began in 1929. Several albums by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Surface to Air On this day in 1952, the schooner America, representing the New York Yacht Club, defeated 15 British ships in a race around the Isle of Wight; they were awarded a trophy that has come to be known as America's Cup. The trophy is defended in the America's Cup yacht races; any yachting club may challenge the current holder of the cup. A new America's Cup match is usually held every three or four years. The Cup is currently held by a New Zealand yacht club; they will defend the Cup against an Italian club in 2021. The documentary Surface to Air follows the preparations for the 35th America's Cup races, which were held earlier this year. Surface to Air is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Moonstruck And on this day in 1922, Theoni V. Aldredge was born. Aldredge was one of the most honored costume designers in the American theater. She was nominated fourteen times for the Tony Award, and won three times, for Annie, Barnum, and La Cage aux Folles. Aldredge also worked occasionally in film and television, and received the Academy Award for her costumes for the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. Her costumes for the 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck play a large part in bringing to life the movie's working-class Italian-American characters; Moonstruck is available for streaming at Hoopla.
