Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.
On this day in 1860, Annie Oakley was born. Oakley was a sharpshooter whose skills were first widely noticed when she was 15; she challenged marskman Frank Butler, whose traveling show had come to Cincinnati, and defeated him in a shooting match. Oakley and Butler were married about a year later, and toured together for much of their lives, including several years with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Oakley was the highest paid member of the Buffalo Bill company. She believed strongly that women should learn to shoot, both as exercise and for self-defense, and is estimated to have taught 15,000 women how to fire a gun. The American Experience documentary Annie Oakley is available for streaming at OverDrive.
On this day in 1955, Paul Greengrass was born. Greengrass is a director whose movies are often dramatized versions of true stories -- Bloody Sunday, Captain Phillips, United 93 -- and whose work is marked by the use of handheld cameras. He has also directed three of the movies in the Jason Bourne series. Greengrass's 1998 film The Theory of Flight stars Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh; it's the story of a disabled woman who hopes to lose her virginity before dying. The Theory of Flight is available for streaming at Hoopla.
And on this day in 1961, Tom Perrotta was born. Perrotta is a novelist whose work often focuses on American suburbia, usually with at least a touch of satire. His novels include Election, Little Children, and The Leftovers. In The Abstinence Teacher, Perrotta focuses on the unlikely relationship between a divorced sex-ed teacher and her daughter's soccer coach, a conservative fundamentalist Christian. The Abstinence Teacher is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook.
