Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Kevin Dann: Expect Great Things On this day in 1817, Henry David Thoreau was born. Thoreau was an essayist, poet, and philosopher whose best-known work, Walden, is a memoir of the two years he spent living in a remote cabin in the forest. He was a strong advocate for the importance of standing up to unjust governments, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" had a strong influence on later political activists, including Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Kevin Dann's Expect Great Things is a biography of Thoreau that focuses on his quest for spiritual meaning; it's available as an e-book at OverDrive, or in print.
Delia Ephron: Siracusa On this day in 1944, Delia Ephron was born. Ephron is a novelist and screenwriter; her movies (This Is My Life, You've Got Mail, Bewitched) have most often been written in collaboration with her older sister, Nora. Her most recent novel, Siracusa, tells the story of two couples vacationing together in Italy when the secrets hiding in both marriages begin to be revealed. Siracusa is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook.
The Best of Sandi Patty And on this day in 1956, Sandi Patty was born. In the 1980s, Patty was one of the most popular singers of Christian music (her name is spelled "Patti" on her early albums), performing 200 concerts a year, many of them in large arenas. Her career suffered a setback in the early 1990s with the revelation that she had had an extramarital affair and was divorcing her husband; Patty has worked since then to regain the trust of her core audience, and to introduce herself to larger audiences. The Best of Sandi Patty is available for streaming at Hoopla.
